Ice cream making machines create frozen deserts such as ice cream and iced yogurt using a range of ingredients. Create real home made ice cream at the touch of a button.

Homemade ice cream can be a very attractive prospect. Not only does the maker have complete control over ingredients used, thereby avoiding unnecessary additives, ice cream recipes can be adapted and varied to meet the family’s needs and tastes.

Home made ice cream is made from a blend of ingredients. These can either be used cold, or heated into a custard prior to use. There are many recipes on the internet, and books explaining the process.

The modern electric ice cream makers are easy to use and do not require the use of salts or ice. Of course, it is possible to make ice cream without a special machine, using no more than freezer bags.

The Ice Cream Maker

Ice cream can be made at home using an electric ice cream maker and ingredients which are readily available from supermarkets and high street stores.

The purpose of an ice cream maker is to churn together ingredients such as cream and sugar whilst freezing it to produce wonderful homemade ice cream.

There are many different brands and models available, and whilst they all do a similar thing, they approach the task in different ways.

Types of Ice Cream Machine

Ice Cream Makers fall into two distinct types – and two very different price brackets! The cheapest ice cream makers are of the ‘cold accumulating’ type. These have a bowl which needs to be frozen before the ice cream can be made. This can take several hours. The second group of machines are more expensive and have their own freezer, thereby reducing the need for any prefreezing meaning that ice cream can almost be made ‘on demand’.

Although many people have positive experiences of their ice cream maker, other people report frustrations and do not get maximum use from it. Ice Cream makers are often cited as the most unused gadgets in the kitchen. Part of the reason for this is due to the fact that people have chosen the wrong machine for their requirements. A summary of the too different types of machines is as follows:

Cold Accumulating Ice Cream Makers

These ice cream makers consist of a bowl which needs to be frozen prior to use and a motor unit which churns the ingredients whilst they are freezing. These machines make about 1 1/2 to 2 quarts of ice cream at one go and can produce ice cream in less than one hour.

Pro’s:

  • Low cost (prices start at less then $50)
  • Easy to use

Con’s:

  • Bowl needs prefreezing and therefore only one batch can be made a day (unless owning more than one bowl in that case one bowl can be left permanently in the freezer)

Compressor Ice Cream makers

Ice Cream makers with compressors are significantly more expensive than the cold accumulating type, starting at around $250. These machines prepare a similar amount of ice cream as the cheaper models, but as no prefreezing is required, batches can be made one after the other without waiting for the bowl to freeze.

Pro’s:

  • No need to pre freeze the bowl
  • Quick to make ice cream from start to finish

Con’s:

  • Expensive to buy
  • Some people find them noisy to use.
